Day One Results: EWS Madeira 2019

by | May 11, 2019

After a day of racing across three dust filled stages series leaders Martin Maes and Isabeau Courdurier continued their domination of the 2019 series. Both riders are heading into the second day with gaps of around 20 seconds each, can anyone close the gap and take the top spots from them tomorrow?

In the Elite Men, Adrien Dailly would provide the best challenge to Martin Maes speed coming in under a second off the Belgian riders time on stage two. Sam Hill would be within the top five for the first two stages showing he is back up to speed on his new 29er but when it came to stage three he would drop back to 19th position. Jose Borges would be the surprise of the day coming third in two of the three stages and now sits comfortably in fourth position at the end of the day.

Isabeau Courdurier would again prove why she is leading the Elite Women’s title with three stage wins and now goes into the final five stages tomorrow with a 22.34 second lead over privateer Ella Conolly. The next ten women would be separated by just 14 seconds after some incredibly close racing. With such small gaps between the top riders, anyone has a chance at standing on the podium at the end of day two.
